Best Practices for Cloud-based eLearning Authoring
Changing markets, economy, technology and all that follows impacts everything around us. From how we commute to the ways we communicate and share. Cloud-based systems have now penetrated almost every aspect of organizational functioning, in controlling resources to delivery channels. A few weeks back we wrote about what cloud-based authoring would mean to eLearning (read the blog here).
But, how do we begin with cloud-based eLearning authoring. Is the process like that of normal authoring? Are there any special aspects to be considered? These are a few frequently asked questions related to Cloud-based eLearning authoring. While the actual process of authoring is almost similar, there are a few things that can help in getting the best out of cloud-based authoring tools. So, here are a few best practices for cloud-based eLearning authoring.
#1 – Goal Setting
A plan is a must. While some consider planning as a buzzkill, an eLearning project without a plan can end up being a learner’s nightmare. Identify the objectives, understand the performance goals, analyze the learners before selecting the cloud-based authoring tool. This gives a clearer picture about the kind of output, interactivities etc. making the selection process easier and ensuring best results.
#2 – Ask for Advice
Word of mouth can be powerful. So, don’t shy away from asking. Take opinions from colleagues in the L&D profession. Gather feedbacks from those who have used various cloud-based authoring tools, try to learn from their mistakes and plan on how to improve the long-term benefits.
#3 – Cost Considerations
As mentioned in a post earlier, one of the reasons for opting cloud-based eLearning authoring is the Pay-as-you-go option that SaaS models offer. So, always try to utilize a flexible subscription model instead of going for an upfront payment model. This also allows you to change to a different system easily, without incurring heavy loss.
#4 – Prioritize Security
Security is considered to be an issue when it comes to cloud-based systems, so prioritize it. Before setting sail, ensure that the authoring tool has all security measures in place to ensure data security, secured transmission facility etc.
#5 – Consider the Connectivity Options
Cloud- connectivity-necessity! Yes, that’s a given. But what about all the integrations, the multi-level access etc. connectivity becomes the key here for successful eLearning creation. So, ensure that it is taken care of.
While organizations with well-established eLearning authoring tools and dedicated team in place would find switching to cloud-based eLearning authoring painstaking, and costly. It is a good option for those who are just getting started. However, gradually with the increasing demand for storage, backup facilities and most importantly convenience there will be a paradigm shift towards cloud-based eLearning authoring.
